Vermilion Parish police jurors are scheduled to consider seeking an independent levee district through the Legislature, increasing ordinance fines to $1,500 and approving a drainage district's tax-renewal election request tonight, according to the October 21, 2026 agenda, posted October 20 at 2:30 p.m..
The notice sets the meeting for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, in the Police Jury meeting room on the courthouse's second floor, 100 North State Street, Suite 200, Abbeville. Agenda item 3 provides public comment on agenda items before the listed business. The notice gives no speaking-time limit or sign-up procedure; it lists 337-898-4300 for accessibility assistance.
The levee-district recommendation comes from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Committee's October 7 meeting. It asks the jury to approve creating an independent district in Vermilion through legislation and having legal counsel contact Iberia Parish, according to page 1 of the October 21 agenda. The agenda does not supply proposed district boundaries, taxing powers or a bill. Those details remain unresolved.
The same committee recommends authorizing bid advertising for Phase IIA of the North Vermilion Bay Shoreline Protection Project (TV-0090) once permits are in hand and subject to Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority concurrence, the agenda states. That is a proposed conditional bidding step.
The Courthouse/General Needs Committee recommends increasing ordinance fines to $1,500, according to page 2. The agenda does not identify which ordinances would be affected, the existing fine amounts or an effective date. It also lists a recommendation to increase juvenile-housing costs without a dollar amount.
A separate new-business item asks jurors to adopt Resolution 2026-R-24, approving an election request for Sub-District No. 5 of the Gueydan Drainage District on April 17, 2027. The proposition printed on page 2 would renew a 14.04-mill tax for 2029 through 2038 for constructing, improving, maintaining and operating drainage works in that district. The agenda estimates $284,000 in collections for a full year. These are the proposed election terms; the agenda records no vote on the resolution or voter approval of the tax.
The posted recommendations give residents concerned about flood protection, ordinance penalties or that district's drainage funding specific items on which to comment. Votes and any amendments require the meeting record.
