How to attend Vermilion Parish Police Jury meetings

Regular meetings fall on the third Wednesday each month. Here is where to go, how public comment works, and how to follow decisions on roads, coastal projects and parish services.

Published

Regular Vermilion Parish Police Jury meetings fall on the third Wednesday of each month; committee meetings fall on the first Wednesday, according to the parish meeting schedule. The August 19 agenda identifies Wednesday, September 16, at 5:30 p.m. as the next full-jury meeting. (August 19 agenda, item 8)

How to attend

The July 15 and August 19 notices place regular meetings in the Police Jury meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse, 100 North State Street, Suite 200, Abbeville. Those notices list a 5:30 p.m. start. Confirm the room and time against the notice for the particular meeting before traveling. (July 15 notice, August 19 notice)

The July notice directs people needing accessibility assistance to 337-898-4300. That office number is also the practical contact for confirming attendance arrangements and asking how to sign up to speak. (July 15 notice)

What residents can speak about

The July 15 agenda places public comment on agenda items immediately after roll call and before the listed business. It then proceeds through presentations, previous minutes, committee recommendations and new business. Arriving before the meeting starts makes it less likely that the comment period has already passed. (July 15 agenda, items 2–8)

The notice does not specify a speaking-time limit or sign-up procedure. Ask the parish office about those arrangements in advance; the agenda's comment period should not be mistaken for an unrestricted opportunity to add a new topic.

Why the meetings matter

The August 19 agenda put bridge work, shoreline protection, roadside debris handling and a proposed pause on new RV parks before the jury. These are concrete reasons for residents concerned about access roads, flooding, neighborhood services or development rules to follow its business. An agenda shows matters proposed for consideration, not proof that they passed. (August 19 agenda, standing-committee reports)

Committee sessions offer another point of entry. The September 2 packet included coastal engineering reports, discussion of no-wake zones on the Vermilion River, public-works reports and finance business, with comment periods on agenda items. These smaller sessions show the subjects moving through the committee process. (September 2 committee agendas)

Do not assume all committees start together: the September 2 notice began the sequence with Coastal Protection and Restoration at 4 p.m., followed by other committees. Individual agendas in that packet list 5:30 p.m. for several committees, so the notice and office should be consulted for timing. (September 2 meeting notice, committee packet)

Before leaving home

Use the Notice of Public Meeting section on the Police Jury homepage to find the dated notice and agenda. The same page links meeting minutes for following up on decisions.

At publication, the homepage linked the September 2 committee packet but no September 16 full-jury agenda. The September 16 date and time above come from the August agenda's next-meeting entry; they do not confirm which subjects will be considered in September. Recheck the notice or call the office before attending.
